Dermaplaning is essentially a form of exfoliation performed with a surgical grade scalpel in a professional setting. The scalpel is scraped across the skin at a specific angle to gently remove the top layers of dead skin cells along with any hair for a smooth and glowing dermaplane finish. Dermaplaning is an excellent exfoliation choice for very sensitive skin types or for patients with conditions such as pregnancy that preclude the use of exfoliating acids. A dermaplaning facial may or may not include the use of chemical exfoliators. Many professionals use dermaplaning as a method to increase the efficacy of a chemical peel or increase the absorption of other topicals such as treatment serums.

What to Know About Dermaplaning
Although very similar to shaving, some states do not allow estheticians, or skincare professionals without a medical license, to perform dermaplaning. States such as California prohibit licensed estheticians from performing dermaplaning, while other states, such as New York, allow it. State regulations allowing an esthetician to perform dermaplaning do not ensure that they have been properly trained to perform a dermaplaning facial. It is always wise to ask a skincare professional about their qualifications for the modality that is being considered.
